Philippines to Ban the code; press release says it all below: PR insider reprot in release…
A senior official in The Philippines is calling for a complete ban on 'blasphemous' film THE DA VINCI CODE before it opens in the capital Manila next week (19MAY06).
The upcoming thriller, based on the bestselling book by DAN BROWN, has already caused controversy in the church for its unorthodox content, drawing criticism from Catholics the world over.
And now President GLORIA MACAPAGAL ARROYA's executive secretary EDUARDO ERMITA, who claims to be a 'devout Catholic', says, "I think we should do everything not to allow it to be shown."
The Philippines, which also banned MARTIN SCORSESE's THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST for its 'blasphemous' content, is one of only two countries in the world that does not have a divorce law, and also discourages contraception.
In a letter to The Phillippines' chief censor, a Roman Catholic archbishop also says, "In the name of many like you who love and revere the Son of God made Man, I strongly appeal to you that the showing of the film (The) Da Vinci Code be banned throughout our land."
President Arroya says, "It's something that we should not be talking about. We might get struck by lightning." More than 80 per cent of The Philippines' eighty-five million population are Roman Catholic.
